Midnight Robbers: The Artists of London's Notting Hill Carnival

Exhibition featuring Ali Pretty, Artistic Director of Kinetika

27 September through 30 October, 2007

Weekdays, 10am - 7pm - FREE!

City Hall, The Queen's Walk, London SE1 2AA

This new and first-of-its-kind exhibition on London's riverbank invites everyone to share the carnival experience and find out more about both the history and roots of carnival and the art form itself, including its remarkable development in the 21st century.

In addition to a selection of costumes, the exhibition offers an exploration of processes, styles, new angles on traditions and insights on designing for carnival through photographs, designs, filmed interviews with carnival artists, carnival footage and a timeline tracking carnival history.

One of the four artists highlighted, Ali Pretty's work is unique in the way she uses a strong narrative and creates an intimate journey within a universal experience. Ali has pioneered telling the story of the evolving travels of carnival around the world. Some of her selected work will be shown which includes drawings of carnival designs, full costumes, photography from events and filmed interviews.

Kinetika Bloco - The London Jazz Festival

November 25th

Royal Festival Hall

Since Kinetika's first performance in 2004 at the London Jazz Festival, the Bloco has gone from strength to strength and this year there will be 100 young people performing. Kinetika's musical journey has unpacked the carnival suitcase and found a truly dynamic, diverse British Carnival sound. The Kinetika Bloco draws it's influences from Trinidad and the Caribbean, Brazil, West and Southern Africa, India and New Orleans jazz. These sounds amalgamated reflect the population of Britain today, and draw on past, present and future journeys - historical, actual and cultural.

Nelson Mandela "enchanted" by the Kinetika performers

The statue of Nelson Mandela was unveiled in Parliament Square on Wednesday 29 August. VIPs including Nelson Mandela, Prime minister Gordon Brown and Mayor of London Ken Livingstone enjoyed performances by Kinetika and London Gospel Community Choir. The Kinetika dancers chose to perform to a song by the South African musician, Hugh Masekela. His township jazz track "The Seven Riffs of Africa", popular at the time of the abolition of apartheid in South Africa, played whilst Kinetika performed a specifically choreographed number.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said:

"You (the Kinetika dancers) were amazing - Nelson Mandela wishes me to pass onto you that he thought you were enchanting!"

Ali Pretty, Artistic Director of Kinetika said:
"It is an honour to be performing at the unveiling of Nelson Mandela's statue. His vision reflects everything that Kinetika stands for. This performance continues Kinetika's ambition to embrace the many cultures of Britain, as per the dreams of Nelson Mandela, and links into our 7 year project 'Imagination Our Nation' which is driven by the belief that in London we can celebrate our unique position of living in a city which houses the world."

The Truth About Lies
24 & 25 August 2007
Coventry City Centre

Kinetika and Coventry-based Imagineer Productions teamed up together to create this production - a powerful and moving narrative tale of the oldest story in the book: the battle of good versus evil.

Inspired by Nobel Prize winning Derek Walcott's 'Ti-Jean and His Brothers', the visual spectacular incorporated drumming, dance, music, giant puppets, carnival costumes and pyrotechnics; with 150 performers and 70 live musicians!

The 2 nights of performance were part of 'Celebrating Coventry' - a weekend of cultural events being organised during the weekend of the UK School Games.
