Sofie Layton http://www.sofielayton.co.uk/ is a Kinetika artist and regularly teaches on the
Kinetika Making of Mas Summer School

Sofie works as an artist, designer and artistic director on a wide range of projects that explore the interface between art and the wider community. Recent work includes “What a Dainty Dish” an installation weaving people’s stories into recipes on an illuminated tablecloth in the vaults at the Tower of London, commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) open by the Queen July 2004. Her production “Charabanc” was created for Epping Forest Arts in collaboration with Mark Storor and was event of the week in Time Out and The Independent in 2002. Other work includes the “Imaginarium” in the Ballroom at the Royal Festival Hall 2003 and an exhibition of sculptural animals at Kew Gardens 2003

Commissions include a large-scale sculptural Yemanja figure for GDF (Greenwich and Docklands festival) Maritime Mysteries 2005 A sculptural Lion Costume for WOMAD in Japan, costumes for Notting Hill Carnival, St.Patricks day in Dublin and ‘The Navigator’ a 3 part animated sculptural figure for ‘Un Peu Plus De Lumiere – LIFT Battersea Park 1997. Sofie has created masks and body costumes for ‘In pursuit of Beauty’ an interactive exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery 1997 and designed for many subsequently exhibitions “Women and Gardens’ 2000, “Potter to Potter” 2002 and “Women Travellers” 2004.

Sofie has travelled and researched mask and puppetry in India and South East Asia. Coordinating The Winter School in Kerala with Jayachandran and Ali Pretty exploring South Indian performing Arts.
